Regals Outlast the Bulldogs

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's basketball team outplayed Redlands in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win over the Bulldogs, 72-57, inside Gilbert Arena Saturday night.

The Regals (8-7, 3-3 SCIAC) were led by freshman Kailee Yan who scored 16 points, going 5-for-6 in free throws, while adding three assists and one steal. Both Kiana Gray and Grace Derksen had efficient shooting nights as they had 12 points each. Derksen was 5-for-7 and made two out of her three free throws. Gray also led the Regals defensively as she tallied six rebounds, five of them being defensive. Jessi Westering scored a career-high 11 points and added two assists.

Scoring came easy at the beginning of the game as the Regals led 17-9 in the first quarter. The Bulldogs tried to come back in the second but every basket made by Redlands was answered by a basket from Cal Lutheran. The Regals continued to put up the points and led 31-25 heading into halftime.

Heading into the third quarter, the Bulldogs turned it on. They made shot after shot, cutting the deficit to a four point difference with six minutes left. Westering made a jump shot which started the 6-2 run for the Regals. In the fourth quarter, Nayiri Aslanian came off the bench and made a quick three-pointer from an assist from Westering. A few plays later, Westering made a deep three-point jumper herself, giving the Regals a 56-40 lead. Redlands didn't have an answer for Cal Lutheran and the Regals walked away with a 72-57 victory.

Cal Lutheran will take on Caltech at home on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
