CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer's Renae Tamura and Keilani Ikehara combined for 31 points as the Sagehens knocked off the Cal Lutheran Regals, 49-43, Saturday night in Rains Center for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game.
Tamura scored 16 while Ikehara added 15 more to lead Pomona-Pitzer (3-9, 2-3 SCIAC). Anita Romero had a game-high 17 rebounds and two blocks.
Kiana Gray led the Regals (7-6, 2-2) with 11 points. She tallied four rebounds. Taylor Oshiro came off the and added nine points. Kayla Watterson scored eight points and had a team-high 10 rebounds. Cal Lutheran's two conference losses have come on the road.
Pomona-Pitzer outrebounded CLU on the glass, 47-33. The Regals had more bench points and more points off turnovers, both 16, but only shoot 23.7-percent from the field compared to the Sagehens' 37.5-percent.
The first quarter showed a lot of really good defense and neither team could get their offense going. With Pomona-Pitzer up 9-8, the Sagehens finished the quarter on a 5-0 run and took a 14-8 lead. Pomona-Pitzer opened up the lead in the second quarter and outscored the Regals 20-13 and had a 34-21 lead at the half.
The Regals turned on the defense in the third quarter and held the Sagehens to only six points. However, CLU still couldn't get the offense going and only put up nine points. Pomona-Pitzer led 40-30 going into the final quarter.
The Regals continued to grind in the fourth. Gray hit a three-pointer with 4:23 left, and CLU was only down 44-40. On the next possession, Gray would make it only a four-point lead again as she made both of her free-throws. Four points was the closest CLU would get as Pomona-Pitzer hung on to win 49-43.
Cal Lutheran returns home for the next game and hosts Chapman Monday at 7 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
