Three Regals Score Double-Digits

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. —  Cal Lutheran's Kiana Gray, Kailee Yan and Jozie Tangeman all scored double-digit points, but the Regals weren't able to overcome Buena Vista as the Beavers won the game, 71-67, Friday afternoon in Gilbert Arena.

The game was competitive all the way around and didn't disappoint in the final minutes. In the end, the Regals dropped to 7-4, while the Beavers improved to 6-5.

Gray led the Regals with 16 points and added six rebounds, two steals and one assist. Yan and Tangeman came off the bench and scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Both hit two big three that were crucial down the stretch and kept the Regals in the game.

Kayla Watterson led the Regals and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds. Grace Derksen kept the offense moving and dished out six assists. Danielle Roumbos went 3-for-4 from long range and finished with nine points.

The big difference in the game was shooting percentage as the Regals shot 35.5 and the Beavers finished at 48. BVU also outscored the Regals in the paint, 36 to 16.

Cal Lutheran jumped all over Buena Vista in the opening minutes and Gray scored the first five points as the Regals took the early lead. Rylie Wada made a layup a few moments later and CLU was up 9-2. The Beavers bounce back, but it was the Regals with a 12-7 lead at the end of the first.

Buena Vista opened up the second quarter with a 14-5 run and led 21-17. The Beavers held the lead throughout the rest of the second quarter and had a 32-24 lead at the half. Both teams scored 18 points in the third and BVU had a 50-42 lead at the end of the third.

The Regals tried to make a comeback in the fourth, but whenever they got close, the Beavers would answer. After a Yan three, the Regals cut the lead to one, 50-49. Free throws and layup pushed the Beavers' lead back to five at 54-49. Taylor Oshiro hit a big three and cut the lead to two. Regals were down 54-52 with 5:29 left in the game.

CLU kept battling as a layup from Watterson had the Regals only down by two, 62-60. With 26 seconds left, Tangeman hit a three-pointer to make the score 69-67. That would be as close as the Regals would get as the Beavers held on to win the game 71-67.

The Regals continue the season with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action and travel to Whittier to take on the Poets Wednesday at 7 p.m.
