Regals fall to Mustangs

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Master's University was led by Hannah Forrar as she scored 15 points and the Mustangs defeated the Cal Lutheran Regals basketball team 71-47 Wednesday afternoon in Bross Gymnasium.

The Regals suffered their first loss of the season and are 2-1. The Master's University, a NAIA opponent, is on a six-game winning streak and is 6-1.

Cal Lutheran was led by Kailee Yan as she tallied 14 points. She added one rebound and one assist. Kayla Watterson continued her dominance on the glass as she pulled down 10 rebounds. She has 10-plus rebounds in all three games this year. She was two points shy of a double-double as she scored eight. Watterson filled up the stat sheet as she led the team in assists and blocks with three and two, respectively.

Grace Derksen and Kiana Gray each scored six points and Nayiri Aslanian added five more. Gray added nine rebounds and two assists.

The Mustangs jumped all over the Regals from the beginning and led 15-2 with 3:20 left in the first period. Master's University pushed the lead to 15 after the first quarter and led 20-5. In the second quarter, the Regals trimmed the lead, but the Mustangs still led 26-16. Every time the Regals got some momentum going, the Mustangs snatched it away from them. TMU kept the pedal to the metal and were up 35-18 at the half. Master's University used that lead in the second half and coasted to the 71-47 victory.

Forrar scored the game-high 15 for the Mustangs on 6-of-10 shots and went 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. She added six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Teammate Jessica Soares led the team with seven rebounds and four assists. Rebekah Throns tallied the most steals with three.

It was an off day shooting wise for the Regals as they finished 18-of-64 from the field and 5-of-31 from three-point range. The Mustangs finished 28-of-58 from the field, 6-of-15 from three-point land and were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. The rest of the game was almost even when it came to turnovers, points off turnovers, second chance points and bench points.

Next game for the Regals is Thursday, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. as they welcome the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs into Gilbert Arena.
