Regals Outlast Athenas In Conference Opener

Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The Regals reigned in their first win of the season on Hutton Field with an 11-9 victory over the Athenas.

Taryn Faull started on the mound for the Purple and Gold. She faced nine batter and threw 23 strikes out of 37 pitches.

The game started with two quick runs from CMS. Despite the early lead, the Purple and Gold hung in it and tied it up with a two-run homer from Ariana Mendoza in the bottom of the second. Hanna Booth started off the inning with a double and was then batted in by Mendoza.

The Athenas crossed the plate another four times in the top of the third and the Regals answered right back with three runs in the bottom.

The bottom of the sixth inning is when the Regals opened it up. Regan Laubscher tied up the game when she got on base and tallied an RBI. Mendoza continued the momentum and put the Regals ahead for the first time in whole game after hitting a single when bases were loaded.

The scoring kept coming after Natalie Luna hit a ground ball in-between the third baseman and the short stop. Luna's single made the score 9-7 in favor of the Regals.

This was the turning point in the game for the Regals. After a long time at the plate, they tallied six total runs and seven hits.

The Athenas made a last-ditch effort in the top of the seventh to make up their four-run deficit. Mia Antonino came up with a huge stop for the first out. The Athena at bat hit a line drive to the left of Antonino but she made a diving catch before it could touch the ground.

They scored two runs in the seventh but it wasn't enough. Mia Garcia got the win on the mound and pitched from the fourth inning until the end. Garcia faced 18 batters and pitched 44 strikes of her 69 throws.

Booth had two doubles and one single. She got on base every time she was at bat, giving the Regals a consistent offensive presence when she was in the box. Mendoza led the Regals with five RBIs. Booth, Laubscher, Antonino, Luna, Amanda Gull, and Makayla Lopez each had an RBI of their own. Mia Onesto, a veteran Regal, added a double to the Regals offense.

They hit the road tomorrow for a double header at CMS. Game times are 12 pm and 2 pm.
