Regals’ Pitching and Defense Not Able to Corral Panthers

ORANGE, Calif.  — Cal Lutheran's pitching could not find its groove, giving up 20 runs in the doubleheader with the Chapman Panthers, as the Regals lost game one, 9-1, and then fell short in game two, 11-10, on Wednesday night.

It was a rough outing for the Regals as they lost their sixth straight game. CLU is now 8-20 overall and 2-14 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. Chapman improved to 9-7 in conference, but is just 10-18 overall. 

Lauren Salvati led the offense in the doubleheader and recorded four RBI, including three in the second game. Marissa AlfaiaRachel Barker and Rilee Grau each added one more. Lexie FindleyMia Onesto and Catherine Slabaugh each recorded two runs in the second game. 

Brittany Workman pitched the entire first game. She struck out four batters, but gave up seven hits and four earned runs. Five runs were scored off three CLU's errors. She got the loss and dropped to 3-4 on the year. 

In game two, Olivia Serrano got the start. She gave up 12 hits and eight earned runs while striking out two batters. She pitched 3.2 innings before Meghan Henry came in for the final 2.2. She only gave up one hit, but three runs were scored due to errors. She took the loss and fell to 2-5.

Game One

Chapman scored eight runs before Cal Lutheran could get one on the board. The Panthers put up five runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth. CLU got one run back in the top of the fifth. Singles from Findley and Courtney Haapanen, a sac bunt from Sienna Vannoy had runners on second and third with one out. 

Salvati got the lone RBI of the game as she grounded out to second base, scoring Findley. CU added one run in the bottom of the sixth and won the game 9-1. 

Game Two

The Regals took the lead in the first inning as Onesto scored on a passed ball. Chapman scored two runs in the bottom of the inning before CLU tied the game back up in the second. Salvati singled through the right side and Findley raced home.

The Panthers put up a four spot in the third as they took a 6-2 lead. Cal Lutheran got one run back in the fourth as Salvati tripled, scoring Alfaia. CU fired right back and scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. 

Cal Lutheran cut the lead to just two and scored three runs in the fifth with RBIs coming from Alfaia and Salvati and then an error by Chapman scored another. CLU tied the game up the very next inning due to another error and then a fielder's choice RBI from Grau. 

The Regals took the lead in the top of the seventh as Barker grounded out, recording a RBI, and then Onesto scored due to a wild pitch. The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom, due to two Cal Lutheran errors, and stole the second game, 11-10. 

Up next for Cal Lutheran is a doubleheader with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday with the games set for 12 and 2 p.m.
