THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.  — The Cal Lutheran softball team came up just short in game one, losing 3-2, and then got shut out in game two, 13-0, as the Regals were swept by the La Verne Leopards at home on Saturday afternoon at Hutton Field.

The doubleheader sweep dropped Cal Lutheran to 8-18 overall and 2-12 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play.

Game One
Meghan Henry was on the mound and got the first two runners out before the Leopards loaded the bases. La Verne looked to take an early lead but Henry shut the door and got out of the inning. ULV got two runs off of Henry in the top of the second and had an early 2-0 lead.

Cal Lutheran brought in Brittany Workman to close out the second inning. She did just that and CLU looked to tie the game. In the third, CLU had two baserunners with only one out due to a fielding error and a walk. A few batters later, Celeste Ekman got the Regals on the board as she tallied a 2-RBI single. Kendall Marinesi and Catherine Slabaugh both recorded a run as they raced home.

ULV got out of the inning and looked to answer in the top of the fourth. It was the only run the Leopards got off of Workman as they took a 3-2 lead. Workman shut out La Verne after that. She pitched 5.2 innings and gave up eight hits with just one earned run.

Cal Lutheran had it chances to tie the game, but left one runner on base in the fourth, two in the fifth and one each in the sixth and seventh. The Leopards held on and took the first game, 3-2.

Game Two
The Leopards got on the scoreboard early and kept the points coming. They roughed up Olivia Serrano and errors by the defense did not help. Through four innings, ULV tallied 10 runs off eight hits. The CLU defense had three errors and the Regals found themselves in a big hole.

Cal Lutheran's offense could not get things going in the second game as the Regals only had two hits through the first four innings.

La Verne added three more runs in the top of the fifth and had a 13-0 lead. Cal Lutheran could not answer in the bottom of the inning and the game ended via the mercy rule.

The Regals hit the road for the next two doubleheaders. On Wednesday, Cal Lutheran is at Chapman for games at 2 and 4 p.m.
