Sagehens’ Bats Get Hot as they Sweep Regals at Home

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Early scoring in both games propelled Pomona-Pitzer past Cal Lutheran as the Sagehens took game one, 8-0, and then game two, 14-5, on Friday afternoon at Hutton Field.

The losses dropped the Regals to 8-16 overall and 2-10 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. Pomona-Pitzer is now 18-7-1 overall and 10-4 in conference.

Game One
Meghan Henry started the game on the mound for the Regals. The Sagehens got to Henry immediately as they tagged her for six hits and eight earned runs in the first inning.

Brittany Workman took over just 0.2 innings in the game and pitched the rest of the game which consisted of 4.1 innings. She only allowed two hits as she gave the Regals' offense a chance to get back in it.

CLU had one base runner in the third as Rachel Barker walked to lead off the inning, but the threat stopped right there. The Regals got their first hit in the bottom of the fifth as Celeste Ekman doubled to start the inning. Pomona-Pitzer got two quick outs, but an error by their shortstop gave CLU runners on the corners. The Regals could not push across the run as the Sagehens won the game in five innings.

Game Two
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board in the first inning, again, and scored three runs. They added two more in the top of the second before the Regals answered. After a walk by Workman and a single from Lauren SalvatiSienna Vannoy smashed a RBI double to right field.

Marissa Alfaia kept the bats going as she singled through the right side, scoring Salvati and pushing Vannoy to third. After Alfaia stole second, Catherine Slabaugh walked to load the bases. Kendall Marinesi was then hit as CLU scored its third run of the inning.

The Sagehens got two outs back-to-back as they tried to end the inning. Barker was up next and tied the game as she singled to right field, scoring two runs, and the score was knotted at five.

Pomona-Pitzer took the lead back in the third and added to their lead in the fourth as they scored one and four runs, respectively. Olivia Serrano lasted 3.2 innings before being pulled. She gave up 11 hits, but just six earned runs, and 10 runs due to defensive errors. The Sagehens added four more runs over the next two innings and won the second game, 14-5, in six innings.

Cal Lutheran is right back at it on Saturday as the Regals host La Verne for a doubleheader at 12 and 2.
