THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Cal Lutheran softball took on non-conference opponent Denison Big Red and fell in both games of the doubleheader, 6-4 and 11-4, on Friday afternoon at Hutton Field.

The doubleheader wrapped up an 18-game home stand and were the final games with non-conference opponents. CLU was 7-11 during the stretch and is now 7-13 during the season. During the home stand, the Regals knocked off No. 10 Williams, 3-1.

Sammy Edmonds took to the mound for the first game. She had a rough start and gave up three runs in the first inning and one in the third. She struck out three batters and held the Big Red scoreless in four innings.

Denison held the Regals scoreless for the first four innings of the game before Cal Lutheran broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Kendall Marinesi and Rachel Barker started the inning. After the first out was made, Brittany Workman loaded the bases as she drew a walk. Lexie Findley doubled in two RBIs and Catherine Slabaugh singled in two more and the Regals tied the game.

CLU looked to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but left a runner on base. Denison took back the lead in the top of the seventh and scored two runs. Sierra Scali came in to try and close out the inning, but was unsuccessful. She took the loss as the Regals could not answer in the bottom of the inning as Denison won the game 6-4.

The Big Red were all over the Regals at the start of the second game. Denison put up eight runs in the first three innings and had a commanding 8-0 lead. Jazren Mojica tallied a hit to start the bottom of the third. After a Marinesi walk, Marissa Alfaia laid down a perfect bunt to move the runners over. Barker did the rest as she singled in two runs.

Denison got both those runs back in the top of the fourth and added one more in the sixth. CLU recorded two more runs as Rilee Grau and Catherine Slabaugh both had a RBI.

The Regals could not bounce back after the slow start as Denison won game two, 11-4, and swept Cal Lutheran.

CLU jumps back in to conference play and will finish the season with 20 games against SCIAC opponent. Up next for Cal Lutheran is at Occidental for games at 12 and 2 p.m.
