Workman Pitches Complete Game Win, Marinesi and Vannoy Add Home Runs; Regals Split with Red Dragons

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Brittany Workman pitched a complete game to earn the win, and Kendall Marinesi added a 3-run home run, as Regals softball took game one of a doubleheader with the Cortland Red Dragons with a final score of 6-2. Cortland bounced back and won the second game 6-1.

On a beautiful day at Hutton Field, Cal Lutheran moved to 6-10 and Cortland got its first win to move to 1-4 as the teams split the doubleheader.

Workman got the nod in the first game and took to the mound. She faced 26 batters over the seven innings and only allowed six hits and two earned runs.

The Regals offense took over and helped Workman secure the win. In the bottom of the first, with runners on first and second, Rachel Barker got the Regals on the board first with a double to left center. The hit scored Marinesi and moved Celeste Ekman to third. CLU had a chance, but could not any more runs in the inning.

Workman made quick work of the Cortland hitters and sat down nine of the first 10 batters. Cal Lutheran added to its run total in the third, as Marinesi hit her sixth home run of the season. It was a 3-run homer, which gave CLU the breathing room it needed.

After Workman sat down all three Cortland batters in the fourth, the Red Dragons finally got to her in the fifth and put up two runs. CLU got one run back in the bottom of the sixth as Ekman singled in Marinesi.

Cortland had a base runner in the sixth and seven innings, but Workman shut them down and moved to 2-2 on the year. She threw a total of 86 pitches in the game.

Cal Lutheran looked to continue the hot hitting in the second game. The Regals got on the board first, in the bottom of the second, as Sienna Vannoy smashed a ball over the left field fence. Her second home run of the year was a solo shot and CLU had a 1-0 lead.

Meghan Henry started the second game and faced some adversity right away. She had three base runners to start the game, but retired the next three and left the mound unscathed. She continued the great pitching in the second inning and sat down the next three to make it six straight retired batters. The Red Dragons got to her in the third and scored three runs.

The Regals made a switch after losing the lead and brought in Sienna Perez. Cortland scored two runs off her in the fourth and added one more in the sixth.

Cal Lutheran could not answer with the run support in the second game as Cortland won the contest 6-1 and gave Henry the loss and dropped her to 2-2.

The Regals continue the season with non-conference play. Cal Lutheran takes on Williams, Tuesday, with the doubleheader set for 12 and 2 p.m.
