Regals End Season with Scoring Parade

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Regals said goodbye to their seniors Saturday afternoon with a split double header against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas. The Regals came up just short in game one 1-0, before busting out 9-1 in game two to cap off the 2018 campaign.

Brittany Workman got the nod in game one, giving up just one run on seven hits while striking out in four in her eighth complete game of the season. She was outdueled though by CMS's pitcher, Anna Gurr, who allowed just three hits in a complete game shutout.

Gurr would end up coming back to pitch in game two after the Athenas allowed three walks and two earned runs in the first inning. Kendall Marinesi got the Regals on the board first with a single to the shortstop that brought Olivia Leyva home. Workman then walked to load the bases for Abbigael Howard who worked four balls of her own to walk in the go-ahead run.

The Regals were not anywhere near done yet and added five runs in the bottom of the second to push their lead out to 7-1. The big inning began with a single by Makenna Pellerin down the left field line followed by another single to left by Leyva.

Antonia Rapisardi then beat out an infield single to the shortstop to load the bases for Marinesi who wore a pitch to force in a run. Three consecutive singles by Workman, Mikaela Mayhew and Howard followed to bring home three more. Capping off the scoring run, Catherine Slabaugh knocked a sacrifice fly to center to bring in the fifth run of the inning.

Looking to shut the game down early, starting pitcher Olivia Serrano worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the third and gave up just one hit the following two innings. The Regals needed to put up just one more run in order to force the Athenas to surrender the game early.

Marinesi did just that and more as she doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to score Jacy Watanabe and Leyva. With the score now 9-1 after five innings of play, the Athenas fell prey to the conference mercy rule.

Saturday's split double header moves Cal Lutheran's final record to 17-23 overall and 10-18 in SCIAC play. Marinesi led the team with 37 RBIs and a .419 batting average on the year. Leyva followed closely behind, hitting .400 with 23 RBIs on 50 hits. Serrano led the pitchers with seven wins while Sienna Perez finished with a team-best 3.00 ERA.
