Leopards Escape with Two One-Run Wins

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran's Kendall Marinesi and Antonia Rapisardi both tallied three RBIs, but the Regals fell to the La Verne Leopards twice, 3-2 and 7-6 (8 innings), Friday afternoon at Hutton Field.

It has been a rough year for Cal Lutheran when it comes to close games as the Regals have lost seven one-run ball games, including three straight. They have also played in five extra-inning games and are 2-3 in those contests.

Marinesi and Rapisardi led the offense as both recorded a team-high three RBIs on the day. Jacy Watanabe and Meghan Henry both added one.

In game one, Brittany Workman was on the mound. She threw 127 pitches and had a complete game. She allowed nine hits, but only three runs through seven innings of work.

The Leopards got on the board first and scored one run in each of the first three innings and took the lead.

Cal Lutheran scored all of its points in the bottom of the third. Watanabe put the ball in play and reached on an error as she scored Olivia Leyva. Rapisardi was next and hit a single down the right field line, scoring Watanabe. That was it for both teams as La Verne won 3-2. Workman got the loss as she dropped to 3-6.

Olivia Serrano and Meghan Henry split the second game as each pitched 4.0 innings. Serrano got the start on the hill and gave up five hits and struck out three.

The Regals gave Serrano the early lead. Marinesi got Cal Lutheran on the board in the bottom of the first as she singled home the first two runs.

La Verne eventually tied up the game in the top of the second and then took a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth as the Leopards added three more. Cal Lutheran got one run back in the bottom of the fifth as Henry fouled out. Workman tagged up and rushed home.

Cal Lutheran tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth. Rapisardi reached on an error as Watanabe ran home and made it a one-run game. Marinesi tied the game at 5-5 as she hit a triple to right field.

Neither team could score in the seventh and the teams went to extra innings. After La Verne scored two runs in the top of the eighth, it was up to the Regals to answer. Leyva doubled to lead off the inning and Watanabe singled putting runners on the corners with no outs.

Rapisardi then hit into a fielder's choice as Leyva raced home. Cal Lutheran was able to load the bases, but couldn't push another run across as La Verne held on for the 7-6 win. Henry took the loss and dropped to 2-2.

Cal Lutheran is back on the road as the Regals trvale to Redlands, Calif., and take on the Bulldogs Saturday at 12 and 2 p.m.
