VENTURA, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran softball team took a break from studying to volunteer at the Ventura County Regional Special Olympics Softball Competition on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Camino Real Park.
Twelve members of the program, including returners Kendall Marinesi, Mikaela Mayhew, Antonia Rapisardi, Sierra Scali, Catherine Slabaugh, Jacy Watanabe and Brittany Workman and newcomers, Emma Bullock, Meghan Henry, Areli Moreno, Jaz Palafox and Sienna Perez attended the event and worked with the Special Olympians in several facets of the game.
The group of Regals was tasked with monitoring the skills competition, which was comprised of four events: hitting, fielding, throwing and running. CLU student-athletes offered hands-on teaching and guidance as the players of all levels and ages completed softball related tasks.
At the conclusion of the day, the squad presented medals to each Special Olympics athlete who participated.
"Our team was very excited to attend and be directly involved with the Special Olympics Event," Mayhew, a senior second baseman shared. "Our experience was rewarding as it showed us how lucky we are to step on the field each and every day," she went on, "We look forward to continuing our involvement with the Special Olympics Organization."
Softball season for the Regals will begin on Saturday, Feb. 3 with a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) at Hutton Field with first pitch set for noon.
