THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran University men's water polo team was shut down by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kingsmen still hold the No. 2 spot in the conference standings as they hold the tiebreaker against No. 3 Whittier. Cal Lutheran is now 9-2 in conference and 19-4 overall.

Andre Rivas was in goal and kept the Kingsmen in the game with eight saves. After allowing four goals in the first quarter, he combined with the defense to allow just six goals the rest of the way.

It was an off day for the Purple and Gold's offense as the Kingsmen hit the post many times.  Cormac Flanders and Taylor Garcia both scored two goals as Ben Brown and Wyatt Lowe both added one. The Kingsmen defense tallied 12 steals, Brown had the most with three, but it was not enough to stop the Stags.

The flood gates opened to start the game as CMS took an early 2-0 lead. Cal Lutheran answered, keeping the game close, and the score was 4-3 after one quarter. The defenses picked it up in the second quarter. The Stags got the lone goal and had a 5-3 lead at the break.

The defenses continued to hold strong in the second half and the score remained 5-3 with four minutes left in the third. The Kingsmen finally broke through and ended their scoring drought, cutting the deficit to one with 2:58 to go. CMS closed the third quarter strong and doubled up the Kingsmen 8-4. The Stags kept the distance the rest of the game and took the win.

The Kingsmen hit the road for their next two contests before coming home for senior day. On Saturday, Cal Lutheran is at Occidental with the game set for 11 a.m.
