THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran University men's water polo team continued its impressive run through Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and got a hard-fought victory over Occidental 11-9 on Saturday afternoon.
The score was tied at 8 with one quarter to play. The defenses both picked up as no goals were scored through the first four minutes. Parker Jory broke the seal as he fired a shot past the goalkeeper with 3:32 left to play.
Wyatt Lowe put on the finishing touches with two amazing plays. On Cal Lutheran's next possession, Lowe doubled the lead for the Kingsmen firing up his squad. After the Tigers cut the lead to one, Lowe scored the final goal, putting the Kingsmen up by two with 1:08 left.
The Kingsmen improved to 6-0 in SCIAC and 13-2 overall. Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer are the only two SCIAC schools that are undefeated, and are on a collision course as they meet on Wednesday.
Jory was the top goal scorer and recorded a hat trick, while Lowe and Luke Matthies each added two.
The Kingsmen moved the ball around well as six different athletes recorded an assist. Ben Brown kept everyone in the mix as he dished out four assists.
The defense kept the Kingsmen on pace to win, with Andre Rivas in the goal. He made nine saves, with one steal, and Brown added four steals to complete an all-around game.
The Kingsmen are back in the water on Wednesday for a matchup of the No. 1 and 2 teams in the conference. Cal Lutheran travels to Pomona-Pitzer with the game starting at 4 p.m.
