Brown, Goldsmith Earn All-Conference Honors; Rond Garners Coaching Staff of the Year

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.— The 2018 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) men's water polo teams were announced Thursday and Ben Brown earned First Team, Dillon Goldsmith was selected Second Team and head coach Craig Rond and assistant coach Cody Pletcher garnered Coaching Staff of the Year.

Brown, an attacker for the Kingsmen, earned First Team honors in his freshman season. The native of Chula Vista, Calif., tied for the most goals on the team with 49, and tied for the sixth-most in the SCIAC. He facilitated the ball as well and recorded the third-most assists in the SCIAC with 35. He showed an all-around game and recorded the second-most steals in the conference with 55. He added 22 drawn ejections and 10 field blocks. 

Fellow freshman, Goldsmith, received All-SCIAC Second Team honors. He was one of three freshmen to make it on the Second Team. Goldsmith had the third most goals for the Violet and Gold with 46. He led the Kingsmen with 35 drawn ejections as he created a plethora of power play opportunities. He added 19 steals, nine field blocks and eight assists. 

Coach Rond and the Cal Lutheran coaching staff garnered SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors after directing the Kingsmen to a 16-11 overall record and an 8-6 mark in SCIAC play. The Kingsmen, which finished 6-8 a year ago and missed the conference postseason tournament, secured the fourth seed in the 2018 SCIAC playoffs and has now won six of its last seven games heading into the postseason. This is Rond's first SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honor. 

Pomona-Pitzer's Adam Ward was voted the SCIAC Athlete of the Year, Whittier's Eric Borunda was the Newcomer of the Year and Redland's Mitchell Walker earned the Character Award. 

Cal Lutheran continues the 2018 season in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Kingsmen are on the road and play Whittier Friday at 7 p.m.
