Sagehens Double Up Kingsmen

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens used a big first quarter, outscoring the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen 5-0, and walked away with a 14-7 win Saturday morning at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. CLU drops to 4-7 and 1-3 in the SCIAC.

Dillon Goldsmith led the Cal Lutheran offense with four goals. Ben Brown, Parker Jory and Tanner Kaplan each added one more. George Lundgren, Stephen Blaauw and Kyle Crist tallied an assist.

The Kingsmen scored four of their goals on power play opportunities. They had a total of nine on the day. Brown, Hans Cole and Goldsmith each recorded two drawn ejections.

Andre Rivas was in goal for Cal Lutheran and made 13 saves. He added one assist and one steal. Goldsmith continued his stellar play defensively, too, and recorded three steals.

It was a tough start for the Kingsmen as Pomona-Pitzer took an early lead. The Sagehens controlled the first quarter and were up 5-0. CLU had a chance at the end of the quarter, but Lundgren's shot with five seconds left hit the post. The Sagehens shot .500 in the quarter.

The Sagehens kept the scoring going in the second quarter and added one goal at the beginning. Pomona-Pitzer then had a breakaway and was looking to add to its lead, but Rivas was there for a big save. The Sagehens added two more goals a little bit later and pushed their lead to eight. Goldsmith put the Kingsmen on the board as he scored with 13 seconds left in the half. Pomona-Pitzer took an 8-1 lead into the half.

Cal Lutheran carried that momentum into the third quarter and Goldsmith scored on the first possession. After a great save by Rivas, Goldsmith scored another on the ensuing possession and recorded a hat trick. The Kingsmen kept the goals coming. A perfectly designed play allowed Brown to get open and he made the Sagehens pay. Cole got the assist as CLU cut the lead in half at 8-4. Kaplan and Goldsmith both added another goal before the end of the third, but Pomona-Pitzer still led 11-6.

Pomona-Pitzer kept the distance throughout the fourth quarter. Jory scored his first goal of the game, with four minutes remaining. The Sagehens controlled the quarter, outscoring the Kingsmen 3-1, and won the game 14-7.

Cal Lutheran hits the road for its next contest. The Kingsmen will take on the Occidental Tigers Wednesday at 4 p.m.
