PASADENA, Calif.— Cal Lutheran's Ben Brown scored a career-high four goals and the Kingsmen added an eight-point third quarter as they took down the Caltech Beavers 18-9 Wednesday night at the Pasadena City College pool.
CLU improved to 4-3 on the season and moved to 1-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). CIT dropped to 1-6 and 0-1 in conference play.
Nine different Kingsmen scored for Cal Lutheran. Tanner Kaplan was the next big scorer for CLU and recorded a hat trick. Kyle Crist, Wyatt Lowe, George Lundgren, Stone Parker and all added two goals apiece. Seth Hightower, Justin Krause and Nathan March each put one into the back of the net.
Crist, Krause, March and Parker all scored their first collegiate goals for the Violet and Gold. Altogether, the Kingsmen had a .621 shooting percentage compared to Caltech's .310.
Cal Lutheran moved the ball around well as eight different Kingsmen tallied an assist. Brown led defense with three steals and Dillon Goldsmith and Stephen Blaauw each had two. Five different Kingsmen also recorded a drawn ejection.
Andre Rivas and Jonathan Salandi split time in goal. Rivas started the game and made four saves and added one steal. Salandi tallied seven saves and also had three assists.
Caltech took the early lead as the Beavers scored two minutes into the game off of a power play. The Kingsmen answered the call as Lowe evened the score with three minutes left in the first quarter. Lowe added his second goal on the ensuing offensive possession for CLU. Brown made it 4-1 as he added back-to-back goals late in the quarter. Kaplan capped off a stellar first quarter as he scored the fifth goal with three seconds remaining, with the assist from Blaauw.
Lowe recorded his hat trick early in the second quarter. Caltech also added two goals as the Kingsmen led 6-3. Each team then added another goal as Lundgren gave CLU a 7-4 lead with four minutes left in the half. Kaplan scored a late goal, again, this time with the assist from Goldsmith, with four seconds left. The Kingsmen took an 8-4 lead into the break.
Cal Lutheran went off in the third quarter and scored seven unanswered goals. Parker scored twice, while Hightower, Brown, March, Crist and Krause each added one. Caltech added one more to their total before Krause added another for the Kingsmen. Cal Lutheran had a commanding 16-5 lead at the end of three quarters. Brown and Kaplan both added another goal in the fourth as the Kingsmen won the game 18-9.
CLU continues conference play on the road. The Kingsmen travel to La Verne, Calif., Saturday to take on the la Verne Leopards at 11 a.m.
