Kingsmen Sweep Mariners in Season Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran opened their season with a clean sweep, winning all nine of their matches over Marymount University, Wednesday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Courts.

"It was great to see the Kingsmen in action again," said Head Coach Mike Gennette. "I'm looking forward to a fantastic season.

Isaiah Volk began the season competing as Cal Lutheran's number-one in singles. The junior made quick work of his opponent, winning his match 6-1, 6-2.

In the number-two spot was Jake Haffner who comfortably won his match 6-3, 6-2.

Beginning his career wearing the Purple and Gold was Darvel Lossangoye who cruised to a 7-5, 6-2 victory as he competed as the number-three in singles.

"It was a great first experience," Lossangoye said. "It was exciting. I was a little nervous, but it's going to be a great adventure."

Charlie Spina opened his season on a high note as he dominated his opponent with a quick double-bagel, 6-0, 6-0, in the four spot.

Sean Yaghoubi and Sebastian Ariza closed out the singles competition with two more convincing victories. Yaghoubi took his match 6-2, 6-1 while Ariza finished things off with a double-bagel.

Moving over to the doubles competition, Volk and Haffer competed as the team's top duo. They teamed up to knock off Marymount's number-one doubles team 8-7 in tightly contested match.

Lossangoye and Spina won without too much trouble in the number-two position, coming out with an 8-4 win.

In the final match of the day, Ryan Murphy and Yaghoubi quickly put away their opponent with an 8-1 win.

Cal Lutheran looks to continue their winning ways when they head north to UC Santa Cruz on Feb. 8 to face the Banana Slugs as well as Foothill.
