Kingsmen Defeated by Banana Slugs

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen played the nationally ranked UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, Sunday morning. Though the Kingsmen went into two tie-breakers, they fell to the Slugs, 6-3. 

Kicking off the day, Kingsmen doubles senior Yahn Gawrit and sophomore Isaiah Volk, No. one doubles, just barely fell 8-7. Freshman Aaron Moylan and senior Kylel Gillam, No. three doubles, fell 8-7. 

Rounding off doubles play, junior Jake Haffner and Guillaume Ruaud, No. two, took the victory against their opponents, 8-3. 

Commencing singles play, Gawrit, No. one singles, fell 6-4 and 6-1. Haffner, No. three, fell 6-4 ad 6-3. 

Moylan, No. six singles, added a victory for the Kingsmen, 6-4 and 6-1. Following right behind, Ruaud, No. four, won 6-4 and 6-1. 

Being the only player to have won in both singles and doubles play, Ruaud said "I am happy to have bounced back so well after the loss yesterday to get the two wins today. It was just fun to be on the court again and to fight for CLU!"

Toward the end of the match, the Slugs were up 4-3 with Kingsmen Sulahian leading at No. five in the third set, after falling in set one 6-2, and winning set two 6-1. After having 8 match points, the UCSC player was able to convert his first match point to take the win at No. five for the Slugs, finishing 7-6.

Volk, No. two, was also in the third set. After being victorious in set one, 7-6, he fell in set two, 6-3. Volk took his opponent to a super tie-breaker but fell 10-7.

The Cal Lutheran Kingsmen return home to face Salisbury State, Wednesday, March 20, at 1 PM PST.
