Kingsmen Sweep Doubles on Senior Day, Still Fall to No. 36 Bruins

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's tennis team swept doubles play on Senior Day, but the Kingsmen still lost to the No. 36 George Fox Bruins 5-4 Monday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center.   

CLU got off to a great start as they claimed the first three points. The seniors and other Kingsmen came out in full force.

Senior Joshua Legardy and junior Ransom Braaten got the Kingsmen going as they won 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. The all-senior doubles team of Andrew Tufenkian made it 2-0 as they were victorious 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. The Violet and Gold then swept doubles play as senior Lucas Tilly and junior Yahn Gawrit claimed the No. 1 spot with a score of 8-7 (6-0).

Cal Lutheran looked to keep things going in singles play, but the Bruins were there with an answer.

George Fox took the first point as Tufenkian fell 1-6, 0-6 at the No. 5 spot. The Bruins cut into the lead again as Braaten lost 2-6, 1-6 at the No. 2. The score was then tied as Legardy took a 1-6, 2-6 loss at the No. 6.

The Bruins too their first lead of the match at 4-3 as Gawrit fell 3-6, 3-6 at the No. 1 spot. George Fox went onto clinch the macth at 5-3 as Kashani was defeated at the No. 4 with a final score of 6-3, 6-3, 1-6.

The Kingsmen scored the final point of the day as Tilly was victorious at the No. 2 spot. He lost the first set 2-6, but came back to win the next two 6-4, 3-1, and took the match.

Cal Lutheran's regular season ended at 5-13, with a conference mark of 3-4. The Kingsmen advanced to the SCIAC Championships and will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. in Claremont, Calif.
