OAKLAND, Calif. — The California Lutheran men's tennis team got its first win of the year as the Kingsmen defeated De Anza College 8-0 Sunday at the Meyer Tennis Courts. CLU also took on Holy Names, but lost 8-1.
Versus De Anza, the Kingsmen won all three doubles matches and took the lead. Yahn Gawrit and Lucas Tilly were victorious at the No. 1 spot (8-4), Dara Kashani and Andrew Tufenkian won at the No. 2 spot (8-1) and Kylel Gillam and Ransom Braaten claimed the No. 3 spot (8-3).
The Kingsmen carried that momentum into singles play as they all won in straight sets. Tilly won at the No. 2 spot (7-6, 7-6), Kashani claimed the No. 3 (6-2, 6-3), Sebastian Ariza was victorious at the No. 4 (6-1, 6-1), Gillam took the No. 5 (6-5, 6-0) and Joshua Legardy won at the No. 6 (6-0, 6-0). The match at the No. 1 spot did not play.
Against Holy Names Kashani and Tufenkian were victorious at the No. 2 doubles spot. They won CLU's only point as they claimed the match 8-3. Gawrit and Tilly were close at the No. 1 spot as HNU won 8-7. Braaten and Sulahian also put up a good fight at the No. 3 spot but fell 8-6.
Singles was very competitive as three matches went the distance. Florent Auteil, Kashani and Sulahian each took their match to the very end.
Auteil played at the No. 6 spot. He won the first set 7-6, but dropped the next two, 4-6, 6-10. Kashani lost his first set at the No. 3 spot 2-6. He won the second set 7-6 and forced a third. He dropped the third set 3-6. Sulahain competed at the No. 4. He won the first set 6-2, but lost the next two, 2-6, 0-6. The Hawks swept the Kingsmen in the final three spots and won 8-1.
Cal Lutheran (1-8) continues its season back at home as the Kingsmen host Principia (Ill.) Monday at 1 p.m. in the Poulson Tennis Courts.
