NEW YORK, New York — Long time Cal Lutheran tennis coach Mike Gennette received recognition from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the United States Olympic Committee as the 2016 Player Development Coach of the Year.
Gennette was one of five distinguished tennis coaches honored for his contributions to the sport of tennis. He was recognized this week at the US Open, taking place Aug. 28-Sept. 10 at Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Flushing, New York. He shared the honor with Henner Nehles as the 2016 recipients.
In his 25th season as the head men's tennis coach, taking over the reins of the women's program in the spring of 2017 as well, Gennette has coached 11 All-America honorees for the Kingsmen. In addition to his work at his alma mater, the Newbury Park, Calif. resident owns the Total Tennis Academy through which he experienced much success. Most recently, he coached Claire Liu to girls doubles victory at Wimbledon in 2016 and Kayla Day to the girls singles title at the US Open as well as the singles semifinals at Wimbledon. Finally, he helped Austen Huang to the No. 1 USTA boys 18's spot.
Off the court, Gennette has served on various committees including the USPTA National Executive Committee and the National Finance Committee.
This week he spent time as a guest, with his daughter Allison, in the USTA Presidents Suite watching top players from around the world compete on the biggest stage.
Upon his return to Southern California, Gennette will continue his tenure as the head men's and women's tennis coach at CLU.
