Brewer and Nybo Top Podium Tolls at Chris Knorr Invite

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Junior Ben Brewer and sophomore Andreas Nybo led Cal Lutheran with three first-places finishes apiece over the weekend. As a team, the Kingsmen tallied 25 podium finishes, leading the way to a 191.5-149.5 victory over UC Santa Cruz at the Chris Knorr Invitational.

Brewer got things going on Friday afternoon with a first-place finish in the 1650-free, touching the wall at 16:48.08. Sophomore Stephen Blaauw finished shortly after in second at 16:54.19, nearly 25 seconds faster than the third-place finisher.

Brewer additionally took first in the 200-free (1:46.82) and 500-free (4:49.91). Followed by Blaauw (1:49.15) and senior Jack Kirby (1:51.91), the Kingsmen swept the 200-free event. Blaauw also picked up second in the 500-free at 4:51.92. 

Nybo collected two individual golds of his own, notching a 53.42 in the 100-butterfly and 1:57.39 in the 200-butterfly. Nybo picked up his third first-place finish alongside freshman Miles Gaitan and Nathan March and sophomore Nick Kenny. The four combined for the a 3:41.15 in the 400-medley relay. Also making the podium in the race, sophomore Kye Daniels, freshman Brenden Fuggles, junior Thomas Hamburger and freshman Andrew Meneses took home third at 3:51.96. 

Closing out the relay groups, Nybo, Kenny, Meneses and Gaitan swam a 3:17.03 in the 400-free, good for a second-place finish. Gaitan added two first place finishes of his own later in the day, notching a 55.09 in the 100-backstroke and a 2:02.47 in the 200-backstroke. 

Rounding out the top-three finishes, March cleaned up the top spot in the 100-breaststroke (1:02.47) and third in the 200-inidividual medley (2:08.34). Freshman Vincent Hemingway took first in the 200-individual medley (2:04.47) and second in the 100-breaststroke (1:03.17) and 200-breastroke (2:19.71). 

Daniels nabbed second in the 200-backstroke (2:05.60) and third in the 100-backstroke (59.03). Kenny recorded third in both the 50-free (22.58) and 100-free (49.54).  Hamburger took second in the 200-butterfly (2:01.55) and Fuggles took third in the 200-breaststroke (2:26.64).

The Kingsmen return to action Saturday, January 12, against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens for their first SCIAC dual of 2019. Events start at 10:30 a.m. PST in Claremont, California.
