Kingsmen Fall to Leopards

Kingsmen Fall to Leopards

LA VERNE, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men's soccer team did well to equalize just before halftime, but it was not enough as the Kingsmen fell to La Verne 2-1, Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

It was a fairly even contest for the entirety of the 90 minutes as the Leopards narrowly edged the Kingsmen in shots (14-11) while CLU held the advantage in corner kicks (5-2).

La Verne were dominant in the first half, enjoying majority of the possession while creating some solid scoring opportunities. The hosts broke through in the 12thminute, grabbing an early 1-0 lead.

Cal Lutheran would find their footing, however, and start playing much better soccer for the remainder of the half. After creating some good scoring chances, Igor Lumbrano slipped a ball through to Aaron Winsick who controlled the pass with his chest and blasted his half volley into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

The Kingsmen nearly took the lead shortly after scoring the equalizing goal when Lumbrano's shot missed just wide in the 35thminute. The midfielder had another chance just a minute later but his shot would sail high of the bar.

La Verne would eventually grab the game-winning goal in the 69thminute when Jovanni Garcia thrusted his team into the lead.

The Violet and Gold were forced to chase the game for the remainder of the match and were just unable to create the chance they needed to equalize once again.

Cal Lutheran will look to get back to their winning ways when they host Redlands at William Rolland Stadium for Alumni Day, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m.
