Korshavn’s Belter Gives Kingsmen Late Goal, Win Over Sagehens

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – With less than 10 minutes to play, Cameron Korshavn decided to try his luck with a volley from over 30 yards out. The sophomore struck the ball about as sweet as you can, and watched his strike rocket into the roof of the net, giving California Lutheran University a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer, Wednesday night at William Rolland Stadium.

The Kingsmen were the dominant team on the night, outshooting the Sagehens 17-5 in the attacking third. The defensive backline of Erick Mejia, Tyler Sherard, Ryan Fraye and Korshavn were in control for the entirety of the match, not allowing Pomona-Pitzer a shot on target.

Sherard nearly opened the scoring in the 8thminute when he rose up to win a header on a corner whipped in by Daniel Pacheco, but his effort was saved.

Chris Pelaez was presented with the next opportunity to score in the 32ndminute, but was denied on his one-on-one opportunity.

Pomona-Pitzer's goalkeeper Byran Diangson was in great form as he made eight saves in the match, denying the Kingsmen in their many clear scoring chances in the first half.

Shortly after Pelaez's run on goal, a cross found the head of Adrian Graciano in the 36thminute, but his headed attempt missed just wide of the post.

Just before the halftime whistle, Matt Myers made a wonderful run down the left wing. The freshman forward had a good look at goal but his left-footed shot was kept out by Diangson, despite the well-struck shot.

After halftime, the Sagehens did better to keep possession, but could never make any attacking moves that tested Owen Ebner between the posts. Cal Lutheran had more success in the second half when they opened up their attack down the wings, using McKay Severance and Pacheco to create space in the channels.

Igor Lumbrano came close to scoring a stunning goal when he attempted a volley from the edge of the penalty area, but his attempt rose just over the crossbar.

After much frustration and overtime looming, the hosts made one final push to end the game in regulation. Pacheco made his way down the right win and looped a long cross to the opposite side of the box. The ball was headed away by a Pomona-Pitzer defender and it bounced to the right foot of Korshavn, getting forward from his left back position. The sophomore put his laces through it from 30 yards out and arrowed it into the top right corner for the first goal of his collegiate career. The thumping effort from the Torrance, Calif. native was the goal the Kingsmen needed to grab the 1-0 win and three much-needed points in conference play.

Tallying shots on goal for the CLU were Joey Arnold (3), Graciano (2), Sherard, Korshavn, Myer, and Pelaez.

Cal Lutheran will look to continue their winning ways when they return to William Rolland Stadium to host Chapman in another conference matchup Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
