INDIANAPOLIS – After earning an automatic qualification to the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament by winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament Championship over the weekend, Cal Lutheran found out its fate this morning as the tournament brackets were announced. The Kingsmen are headed across the country to take on Loras College in the first round of the Saint Paul, Minn., regional.
The 62-team field is comprised of selections from Pool A (automatic qualifications (AQ) from a conference), B (independent schools and school that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification) and C (schools from AQ conferences that were not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams). This year 42 conferences earned automatic qualification, Pool B garnered just one selection and the remaining 19 berths went to Pool C teams.
Regional competition will take place Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 11-12. St. Thomas (19-1) gets the regional started against Wis.-Superior (14-6-2) and the game is set for Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific Time. The Kingsmen (13-4-2) will take on Loras (13-5-1) in the second game at 11:30 a.m. PT.
The remaining two teams will play Sunday, at 11:00 a.m. PT for a chance to advance to the elite eight and compete for the National Championship held in Greensboro, N.C., on Dec. 2.
This is the sixth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Kingsmen. CLU has gone as far as the Elite Eight, which happened in the 1997 season. The Kingsmen haven't played any team in its region this season.
