Kingsmen Draw with No. 13 Redlands

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On Saturday afternoon inside William Rolland Stadium the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team and No. 13 Redlands finished in a draw 1-1. The battle was between the top two teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).

The first half was fought hard as both teams battled for possession in the middle of the field, but Redlands was the first to break through.

In the 26th minute, the Bulldogs won a free kick in the attacking third of the pitch. The ball was sent into the box and Chase Boone assisted Ben Thompson who headed the ball into the center of the goal and gave his team a 1-0 advantage.

The Kingsmen had a great scoring opportunity in the 35th minute when Jared Pischke was sent through on goal. He faced a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper but shot the ball just wide of the post.

Cal Lutheran found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Joey Arnold delivered a through ball to Diego Ortega who put the ball in the top right corner of the net to even the score at 1-1.

The Violet and Gold managed to control the match in the attacking third for the remainder of the half but were unable to find a goal.

The score would remain level at the end of regulation and the game would head to overtime. Two 10-minute periods would be played and a goal would immediately end the match and give the goal-scoring team a win.

Despite a multitude of scoring opportunities from both teams, neither team was able to find a winning goal and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.

The Kingsmen totaled 20 shots with six on goal. Max Sharpe was strong in the midfield as he recorded a shot on goal. Nick Bedford contributed one shot on goal while Brandon Kearney and Ortega fired two shots on goal.

Eduardo Garcia made six clutch saves in goal for Cal Lutheran and improved his record to 10-3-1.

Cal Lutheran (10-3-2, 8-2-2 SCIAC) will be back at William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 25 for Senior Night against Chapman. The seniors from the team will be honored prior to kickoff.
