THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team took to the pitch Saturday afternoon to play La Verne for the first game of a doubleheader inside William Rolland Stadium, as the women's soccer team would take on Pomona-Pitzer in the evening. The Kingsmen pulled out a 2-0 win in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup.
CLU (7-3, 5-2 SCIAC) took an early 1-0 lead after Brandon Kearney tested the La Verne goalkeeper with a powerful shot, but it was blocked. Diego Ortega was there to finish off the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net.
Cal Lutheran doubled their lead five minutes later off a corner. Jaime Alvarado delivered a cross into the box and Ortega hit a first-time volley for his second goal of the match.
The first half would contain all the scoring for the match as both teams were held scoreless in the second half.
The Leopards racked up 11 shots with three on target and the Kingsmen fired 13 shots with six on target. Ortega and Kearney each contributed two shots on goal while Daniel Aguilar and Luis Cabrera both tallied one.
Eduardo Garcia was impressive between the posts for CLU as he made three key saves and improved his overall record to 6-3.
Cal Lutheran will continue conference play when the Kingsmen travel to Claremont, Calif., on Wednesday, Oct. 4 to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7 p.m.
