Kingsmen Tame Tigers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On a brisk Wednesday evening inside William Rolland Stadium, the Cal Lutheran men's soccer team took on the Occidental Tigers in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup. The Kingsmen pulled out a 1-0 victory at home.

The match featured some physical play as the Tigers racked up 13 fouls and Cal Lutheran recorded 11. Two Kingsmen also picked up yellow cards during the match.

CLU took an early lead in the 18th minute when Joey Arnold showed some impressive dribbling and delivered a pass to Brandon Kearney who fired a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal to make the score 1-0. The goal was Kearney's fourth of the year.

That goal would prove to be the only one of the match as Occidental struggled to muster any clear scoring opportunities. The defenders in Violet and Gold were strong on the back line anchored by Daniel Aguilar, Cristian Yepez and Max Sharpe.

The Tigers fired 15 shots, but only two of them were on goal. The two shots on goal came from Gabriel Barrett-Jackson and Brooks Yeager. Cal Lutheran only had five shots with two on goal, but made the most of their scoring opportunities. Kearney tallied both shots on goal for the Kingsmen.

Eduardo Garcia was between the posts and made two solid saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and improved to 5-2 overall.

Cal Lutheran (5-2, 4-1 SCIAC) will travel to Claremont, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 23 to face Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m., for its next SCIAC matchup.
