THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team took the pitch Saturday night under the lights at William Rolland Stadium to face the Beavers of Caltech for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup. The Kingsmen came away victorious by the score of 3-0.
The first half featured a multitude of scoring opportunities for the Kingsmen, but the Caltech defense held tough and the score remained level (0-0) at halftime. Cal Lutheran fired five shots on goal while Caltech's goalkeeper Joe Como impressed with all five saves between the posts.
Defender Daniel Aguilar scored his first goal of the season in the 59th minute to break the deadlock. He kicked a powerful shot from just outside the box that flew into the top right corner of the net to give the Kingsmen a 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran quickly made the score 2-0 in the 64th minute. Cristian Guzman delivered a cross into Brandon Kearney who passed it to Diego Ortega who received the ball in the middle of the box and drove the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The Kingsmen added a third and final goal when Jared Pischke cleverly maneuvered himself through the final line of defense and passed the ball to Alex Cortez who tapped the ball into the net from right in front of goal.
Caltech was held to five shots with only one on goal as the Cal Lutheran defense was anchored by Cristian Yepez and Charlie Villa-Lovos on the back line.
Danny Pacheco added two shots on goal for the Kingsmen. Also contributing shots on goal were Chris Ortiz, Alon Arnaldes and Nico Sabbattella. Eduardo Garcia made one save to earn his third shutout of the season and improve to 4-2 overall.
Cal Lutheran (4-2, 3-1 SCIAC) will host the Occidental Tigers on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
