Kingsmen, Perry Set Program Records for 54-holes; Win CA State Intercollegiate

VENTURA, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's golf team and freshman Jeffrey Perry set team and individual program records for 54-holes as the Kingsmen won the CA State Intercollegiate, with Perry tying for first. The tournament was held Monday and Tuesday at Olivas Links G.C.

The tournament consisted of 10 teams and 57 individuals as the teams played 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday. 

The Kingsmen fired Par or better all three rounds. They shot a 288 in both rounds on Monday and tied the program record for lowest round with 281 over the final 18 holes. Cal Lutheran was the only team to shoot under-par and finished at -7. The next closest team was Mary Hardin-Baylor at +4.

In his first collegiate tournament, Perry was outstanding as he finished all three rounds under-par, setting the program record for 54-holes at 208 strokes. He shot a 4-under par 68 over the first 18, a 72 in the second round and ended his tournament with a 68, putting him at 8-under-par. He tied with Mary Hardin-Baylor's Luis Legaretta via tiebreaker rules. Both golfers had the same stats on the back nine which led to the tie.  

Three more Kingsmen turned in top-16 performances. Ryan Kyaw moved up seven spots during the final round and tied for eighth at 216 (74-72-70). Drake Jones was next and tied for 11th at 1-over-par (73-72-72-217) and Stefan Nelson was tied for 16th at 3-over-par (73-75-71-219). 

Jack Woolslayer rounded out the golfers competing for the team score and tied for 29th at 8-over-par (76-72-76-224). Derek HahnCole Evarts and JP Guimaraes battled for the Kingsmen as individuals. Hahn tied for 25th at 6-over-par (75-72-75-222), Evarts tied for 35th at 10-over-par (76-74-76-226) and Guimaraes tied for 52nd at 21-over-par (81-77-79). 

The Kingsmen performances came from all over the golf course as Nelson and Perry each turned in an eagle. Perry and Jones led the team with birdies as they shot 13 apiece, Kyaw and Woolslayer both tallied 12 and Nelson was right behind them with 11.  

Cal Lutheran gets right back to it this weekend. The Kingsmen will be at the Redlands Invitational on Saturday and Sunday in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
