THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — In a game with many ties and lead changes, it was the Redlands Bulldogs that were able to pull out the win as they defeated the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen 77-65 on Wednesday night.
The conference clash had four ties and eight lead changes. With the scored tied at 52 with 6:21 left in the game, Redlands outscored Cal Lutheran 25-13 the rest of the way to seal the win.
Senior Kyle Ferreira recorded his third double-double of the year. He led the Kingsmen in points, rebounds and assists as he tallied 23, 13 and four, respectively.
Freshman Jared Wulbrun tied his career-high with 15 points. He scored all of his points via three-pointers. He has hit multiple three-pointers in eight games. He had three assists.
Junior Palmer Chaplin scored nine points, senior Austin Cole had eight and sophomore Jarrett Powers came off the bench and chipped in seven. Cole recorded seven rebounds and Powers had two steals. Powers' seven points were a season-high.
Cal Lutheran outscored Redlands in second chance points 19-5. However, The Bulldogs had the upper hand in the paint and outscored the Kingsmen 36-8.
CLU took the lead early on and was up 13-8 after a Wulbrun three. A few plays later, the Kingsmen held that same advantage after a Chaplin three and had a 21-16 lead. Cal Lutheran had its biggest lead of the game with 4:07 left in the first half as Wulbrun drained a three-pointer to make it 27-20. Redlands ended the first half on a 13-5 run and took a 33-32 lead into the half.
The game continued to be close and was tied up at 42 with 12 minutes left. With 10:53 left, Chaplin gave the Kingsmen at 47-44 lead after he nailed a three-pointer. The Bulldogs fought back, again, and the score was tied at 52 with 6:21 left. Redlands took over after that, outscoring Cal Lutheran 25-13, and defeated the Kingsmen 77-65.
Cal Lutheran (3-9, 1-3 SCIAC) plays its next three conference games on the road. The Kingsmen will be at Occidental on Saturday with the tip-off set for 4 p.m.
