FOREST GROVE, Ore. — In a fast paced game, with both teams breaking the century mark, it was the Pacific Boxers that came out on top as they outlasted the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, 126-109, Wednesday night at Stoller Center.
The Kingsmen (2-2) had an efficient night and shot 60.6-percent from the field and 47.6 behind the three-point arc, but were outshot 93 to 66. The Boxers (2-2) hoisted up 40 three-pointers in the game. Pacific outrebounded the Kingsmen 47 to 38 and forced CLU into 26 turnovers.
Austin Cole was two points shy of his career-high and poured in 34 points. He was 13-18 on shooting. He recorded his second career double-double and had a game- and career-high 13 rebounds. He added four assists.
Michael Wadsworth tied his career-high with 23 points. He filled his stat line with five rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
Kyle Ferreira was next with 21 points. He was 6-10 and 3-6 from three-point territory. He recorded seven rebounds and four assists.
Palmer Chaplin put up a career-high 17 points. He was one assist shy of a double-double as he dished out nine. He added five rebounds and two blocks.
The Boxers brought a unique look to the game. They ran a full court press and subbed in a platoon of five new guys every couple minutes.
The Boxers used that play to their advantage early on and were up 29-14 just six minutes in. The Kingsmen were able to weather the storm and went on a 9-0 run as they cut the lead to single digits. Cole made a layup and three while Wadsworth added two layups.
Cal Lutheran stormed all the way back and took a 37-36 lead with 9:04 left in the half. The rest of the half remained close with each team going on runs. The Boxers had the lead at the half with a score of a high score of 70-60.
At the start of the second half, Pacific jumped out to a fifteen-point lead and were up 77-62. CLU fought back once again and brought the lead all the way back to two, 91-89. Right as the Kingsmen answered, the Boxers used another run to push the lead back to double digits. Pacific was up 105-94 with eight minutes left in the game. The Boxers held the lead for the rest of the game and won 126-109.
Kingsmen are back in action on Dec. 5. Cal Lutheran stays on the road and takes on Chapman at 7 p.m. in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
