ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — The 2018 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Football teams were announced Thursday morning and nine Kingsmen were named all-conference. The teams were voted on by the league's member head coaches.
Cal Lutheran's Ty Lozano was voted the John Zinda Award winner as well as All-SCIAC First Team. Joining Lozano on the First Team are Chris Anderson, Obasi Dees, Ethan Pulley and JW Windsor. Four Kingsmen were named to the Second Team as Christian Antezana, Daniel Avila, Frank Molina and Ty Riley garnered honors.
A linebacker from Bakersfield, Calif., Lozano was named the John Zinda Award winner. Lozano serves as Cal Lutheran's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative and has been nominated to represent the SCIAC in that capacity at the NCAA Convention. He is actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was named to the First Team for the second consecutive year. Lozano has recorded 83 tackles, 45 of which have been solo. He has been a big part of the defense and has three sacks, eight tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one interception.
Dees, a junior defensive back was named to the First Team for the third straight year. A native of Antioch, Calif., he has been in the starting position since his freshman season and always has the job of handling the other team's best wide receiver. With opposing offenses going away from Dees, he has stood as one of the best corners in the SCIAC. In the little action that came his way, he totaled 18 tackles and seven pass break ups.
Anderson played one season for the Kingsmen and garnered First Team honors. With seeing limited time due to an injury, the senior impressed with the Violet and Gold. The Hemet, Calif., native led the team with 742 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns. He averaged 6.8 yards per carry and had a long of 53. He also caught 17 passes for 122 yards. His lone touchdown reception proved to be the game winning score against Pomona-Pitzer.
Pulley, a linebacker from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., has been a staple for the Kingsmen defense. He garnered his first All-SCIAC honor and was named to the First Team. He led the SCIAC in tackles (112), solo tackles (48) and tackles per game (11.2). Pulley was fourth in the SCIAC for tackles for loss with 9.5 and also recorded two sacks. He intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns, which ranks first in the conference. He added one forced fumble and had two pass break ups.
A native from Chandler Ariz., Windsor earns First Team in his first season with the Violet and Gold. The junior transfer is a defensive lineman and helped plug up the middle for the Kingsmen. He led the SCIAC with 12.5 tackles for loss (3.5 sacks) for a total of 50 yards. He forced two fumbles and recovered one. He added 68 tackles, with 29 being solo tackles.
Antezana, Avila, Molina and Riley all earned their first All-SCIAC honors as they were named to the Second Team.
A kicker from Lafayette, Calif., Antezana scored the second-most points in the SCIAC at his position with 58. The junior was 94-percent from point-after-attempts and made 31-of-33. He was 9-for-17 on fields goals. He showed a big leg as he kicked a long of 53 yards, which is four-yards shy of the program record.
Avila (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Molina (Lancaster, Calif.), both junior offensive lineman, helped the Kingsmen to the second-most offense in the SCIAC. The Violet and Gold put up 3,804 yards in total. Cal Lutheran also had the third-most first-downs in the conference with 195. The offense recorded 28.7 points per game and 380.4 yards per game, including 205.5 rushing yards per game.
A wide receiver from Rialto, Calif., Riley led Cal Lutheran with four touchdown receptions. The freshman caught 36 passes on the year and totaled the seventh-most yards in the SCIAC with 445. He averaged 12.4 per catch and had a long of 66.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Garret Cheadle was Offensive Athlete of the Year, Mitchell Allen was Defensive Athlete of the Year and head coach Kyle Sweeney and his staff were named the Coaching Staff of the Year. Whittier's Alex Retana garnered Newcomer of the Year honors.
