CALGARY, Alberta — Cal Lutheran standout wide receiver Eric Rogers is on his way back to Calgary after signing with Canadian Football League's (CFL) Calgary Stampeders. Rogers also played for Calgary in 2014 and 2015.
"We're thrilled that Eric has an opportunity to continue playing football," said Cal Lutheran head football coach Ben McEnroe. "He told me recently that he just wanted to get back to scoring touchdowns, and the opportunity with Calgary will hopefully propel him into the next phase of his playing career. He's a proven commodity in the CFL and has an outstanding relationship with the Stampeder organization and with the quarterback there. We are all very proud of Eric and excited to see him back on the field."
Rogers played a total of 19 regular-season games in his first stint with the Stamps and also appeared in three postseason contests including Calgary's 2014 Grey Cup victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Rogers was the Stamps' leading receiver in the championship game with five catches for 108 yards.
The Duarte, Calif., native led the CFL with 1,448 receiving yards in 2015 and was also among the leaders in receptions (87), touchdowns (10), yards after catch (399) and second-down conversions (28) as he earned CFL all-star honors.
After an all-star season in 2015, Rogers then signed with the San Francisco 49ers in January of 2016, but suffered a knee injury in training camp and missed the entire season. After being released in May of 2017, he is ready to make a comeback in the CFL.
At Cal Lutheran from 2009-12, Rogers set many records for the Kingsmen. He is first in program history for receiving yards (3,461), receiving touchdowns (41), receptions (220) and total scoring (274) for a career. For a season, he ranks first in receiving touchdowns (18), receptions (91), total scoring (126) and second in receiving yards (1,298). He also holds the program record for receiving yards in a game (216).
Calgary opens the season Saturday, with the game being televised on Espn2, but Rogers won't be playing right away. Espn2 will televise two more games on Saturday, July 21, at 6 p.m. PST and then the next Saturday, the 28, also at 6 p.m.
