Cal Lutheran Gets Six SCIAC Athlete of the Week Honors

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Matt FlynnLuke Matthies, Erick Mejia, Cesar Sagastume, Julia Trento, and Katie Weaver were selected Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. 

Flynn (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was named the Football Defensive Athlete of the Week. The senior was crucial in Cal Lutheran limiting Pacific Lutheran to just two scores in a 17-14 victory. At linebacker, he made 16 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles that were converted into points to get the Kingsmen back to .500 on the season. The win is their second consecutive over a Northwest Conference foe.

Mattheis (Aptos, Calif.) earned the Men's Water Polo Offensive Athlete of the Week award. He helped the Kingsmen knock off Whittier 8-6 in their lone contest this past week. The sophomore recorded three goals, on four attempts, with one drawn ejection and steal. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Mejia (Agua Dulce, Calif.) garnered the Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week honor. The senior and the Kingsmen backline limited Whittier and Redlands to a combined eight shots on goal in a pair of shutout victories. The upset over Redlands was decided by a single goal after a scoreless first half.

Sagastume (Canoga Park, Calif.) was named the Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week. The senior netted a goal in each of Cal Lutheran's conference wins, including the game-winner in a 1-0 upset of defending SCIAC Postseason Tournament champion Redlands. The win marked Cal Lutheran's first over the Bulldogs since 2017, when the Kingsmen claimed the Postseason Tournament title. The Kingsmen also defeated Whittier 2-0.

Trento (La Verne, Calif.) earned the Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week honor. The senior helped the Regals to a 3-0 week as they swept Occidental, defeated La Verne 3-2 and Redlands 3-1. She totaled 44 digs, 3.67 per set, and added 14 assists and seven aces. 

Weaver (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) garnered the Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week award. The senior and the Cal Lutheran backline recorded two shutouts this past week as they defeated Redlands 2-0 and tied Whittier 0-0. Whittier recorded seven shots on goal and Redlands had just two. The Regals have shutout all three conference opponents and four teams in total.
