Brown, McDermott, Salandi named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Cal Lutheran student-athletes Zion Brown, Connor McDermott and Jonathan Salandi earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning.

Brown was named the football Specialist of the Week, McDermott was football Defensive Athlete of the Week and Salandi was water polo Defensive Athlete of the Week. Salandi earned the award for the second time this season and in his career. Brown and McDermott were honored for the first time in their career.

Brown (Victorville, Calif.) is a defensive back for Kingsmen football. He was instrumental in the Purple and Gold's 25-21 comeback win against Puget Sound on Saturday. With the Kingsmen down 21-10, and the Loggers punting with 4:36 left, the kick was blocked by Bryan Bugni. Brown scooped up the loose ball and ran it back 42 yards for a touchdown, making it a three-point game. He added six tackles.

McDermott (Ventura, Calif.) helped lift Kingsmen football to a comeback win over Puget Sound, 25-21. The senior linebacker made 11 total tackles in the winning effort, including 10 solo and one assisted tackle. He also registered one of those behind the line of scrimmage.

Salandi (Glendale, Calif.) is a goalkeeper for Kingsmen water polo and earned Defensive Athlete of the Week. The senior combined with the defense to shut down the Redlands offense as the Kingsmen won 6-5. Salandi made 15 saves in the win.
